When Should Students Start Planning for College?
When we suggest to start planning for college
Many families assume college planning begins during a student's junior year of high school. While that may have been true in the past, today's competitive admissions landscape makes early planning more important than ever.
The good news? Students do not need to know exactly where they want to attend college as freshmen. Instead, they should focus on building a strong foundation that will keep future options open.
During freshman and sophomore year, students should:
• Focus on earning strong grades
• Explore extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities
• Develop effective study habits
• Begin thinking about career interests
• Challenge themselves with appropriate coursework
By junior year, students should be preparing for standardized testing, researching colleges, building a college list, and beginning scholarship searches.
Senior year often arrives faster than families expect. Applications, essays, recommendation letters, financial aid forms, and scholarship deadlines can quickly become overwhelming without a plan.
Starting early reduces stress, increases opportunities, and allows students to make thoughtful decisions about their future. The most successful college applicants are rarely the ones who start first-semester senior year—they are the students who have been intentionally preparing throughout high school.
At Palmetto Prep Consulting, we help students create personalized roadmaps that make the college planning process manageable, strategic, and successful.
